Many plants labeled "Christmas cactus" in stores are actually Thanksgiving cacti, blooming slightly earlier. However, care for both types the same way. Christmas cacti thrive in indirect light and humid conditions, making them perfect for homes. Ideally, grow your Christmas cactus in a north- or east-facing window to avoid direct sunlight. Red leaves indicate too much light. In the summer, you can move Christmas cacti outdoors to enjoy the humidity, ensuring they are shaded and not overwatered.

To grow Christmas cacti, sow seeds in a mixture of spagnum peat moss and vermiculite, keeping them in indirect light. Seedlings will appear in two to three weeks. Late winter or early spring is the best time for planting. These plants can grow 6-12 inches tall and 12-24 inches wide, adding warmth during the cold months. With proper care, Christmas cacti will bloom for six to eight weeks every winter.
