The Hesperaloe parviflora, also known as red yucca, is a succulent plant similar to yucca that adds a burst of vibrant color to arid gardens. The waxy tubular flowers of this plant are coral-red on the outside and yellow on the inside, resembling the shape and color of aloe flowers. The long, narrow, arching blue-green leaves of this evergreen perennial have deep grooves and white fibers along the edges, which may turn slightly purple or reddish-bronze in cold winter temperatures.

During the summer, clusters of flowers appear on red stalks that can reach a height of 5 to 6 feet. This plant can be used as a decorative focal point in desert landscapes, rock gardens, perennial gardens, rocky slopes, or hillsides near ornamental grass varieties. It also thrives in large pots on sunny patios or porches.

The Hesperaloe parviflora is heat-loving, drought-tolerant, and can withstand cold temperatures down to zero degrees Fahrenheit once established. Native to the Chihuahuan Desert in west Texas and northeastern Mexico, this plant grows to a height of 3 to 4 feet and a width of 2 to 4 feet. It prefers full sun and can adapt to various soils, though it thrives in poor soils.

While drought-tolerant, this plant benefits from occasional irrigation in the summer to promote flowering. It blooms from summer to fall and is hardy to Zone 7a/0 degrees Fahrenheit. Plant at least 3 feet apart for optimal growth. To ensure the best performance, trim back the plant every spring after the last hard frost of the season. The Hesperaloe parviflora can grow to a height and width of 3 to 4 feet.
