General Information on Tillandsia

Tillandsia, commonly known as Air Plants, are a unique and resilient species of plant that do not require soil for growth. Instead, they absorb water and nutrients through their leaves. Enthusiasts of all kinds enjoy attaching air plants to various objects such as driftwood, hanging in air plant holders, or placing them in glass orb terrariums. When grown indoors, Tillandsias typically need to be watered 1-3 times a week by spraying the plant and keeping them in indirect sunlight. In addition to being low maintenance and enjoyable to care for, air plants are also excellent air purifiers. Whether they are kept in your home, garden, office, kitchen windowsill, terrarium, vivarium, or enchanted fairy garden, these charming plants will naturally clean and filter the air while bringing a touch of nature indoors.

Life Cycle of Tillandsia

Tillandsias follow a life cycle in which a single plant grows to maturity and blooms. Before, during, or after blooming (depending on the species), the plant will begin producing offsets, also known as pups. Most plants will produce between 1-4+ pups, which will draw nutrients from the maternal plant as it reaches the end of its life. Once the pups reach 1/3 to half the size of the mother plant, they can be separated for individual growth.

Quick Tips for Tillandsias

Air plants thrive in sunlight and should be placed near a window when grown indoors. They can also flourish outdoors as long as temperatures do not fall below 55°F. When soaking your air plants, ensure they are upside down with the bottom above water if possible. After soaking, gently shake out the excess water and allow the plants to dry completely while upside down. It is important to provide good air circulation for your air plants in their chosen location.
